The project is implemented by the Municipality of Mezdra (Bulgaria), as a lead partner

Total project budget: € 937 151.73
Budget of the municipality of Mezdra: € 453 175.58

The project is implemented jointly by the Municipality of Mezdra (Bulgaria), as a lead partner and the Mehedinti County Gendarmerie Inspectorate (Romania), as a project partner.

The implementation of this project will help create a low-risk area, which will contribute as an added value to the safety of all residents and tourists.

The challenges associated with natural disasters will be overcome through the introduction of fire extinguishing systems and tools, early warning systems for the prevention of natural disasters.

One of the main goals of the project is to restore a retaining wall for protection against a landslide in the municipality of Mezdra (village of Ignatitsa), which also affects the main road leading to the settlements’ part of the municipal road network. As a result of the landslide, the existing retaining wall is completely damaged and the road is in very bad condition. The selected contractor will carry out the construction work to ensure safe living conditions and prevent floods and landslides for all people in the area who use the road on a daily basis. The project includes the construction of retaining walls and related activities in order to ensure safe access for all citizens to the affected area.

In order to better cooperate with the various structures responsible for disaster management and to successfully address natural challenges at national and cross-border level, it is necessary to establish and implement concrete action plans, while the related training of the staff and local administration involved is mandatory. The envisaged joint trainings will facilitate the exchange of know-how and create a well-structured network of mutual support and establish rapid decision-making procedures for critical situations.

The interventions envisaged under the project on the territory of Mehedinti district are related to the fire-fighting activity, the development of action plans and the supply of the respective equipment. The lack of sufficient equipment, as well as the relevant plans, are major problems for the Mehedinti gendarmerie. They have been identified as a critical problem not only for the country and the region, but also for the entire cross-border region of Bulgaria and Romania.

Focusing the efforts of partner organizations in these two areas of risk prevention - ie. firefighting procedures and equipment and the early warning system for prevention of natural disasters and reconstruction of landslide-affected areas by creating retaining walls and both areas will enable them to increase their expertise and response capacity during natural disasters.
